Kidnappings: Lagos Beefs Up Security Around Troubled Areas, Traditional Rulers

Lagos: State Government yesterday said it would beef up security in identified black spots that could serve as den for kidnappers and other criminals following upsurge in kidnap cases particularly traditional rulers in the state.

It will be recalled that the Oniba of Iba land, Oba Goriola Oseni spent three weeks in the den of kidnappers and was released weekend after a ransom of N15.1 million was paid to the abductors.

Two of the suspected kidnappers have been arrested by the police even as manhunt has been launched to arrest other fleeing members of the group. Speaking yesterday when he visited the Oba, Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, said the state government would now extend security to the palaces of traditional rulers across the state.

According to Folami, the move became necessary to forestall repeat of what happened to the Iba monarch as the security of traditional rulers was key to state government.

The commissioner said the police in the state had been equipped with tools to combat criminal activities in the state. Folami, while thanking God for sparing the monarch’s life from the hands of the kidnappers, said, “Government is very much concerned all through while you were in the kidnappers hands and worked assiduously with the police to ensure your timely release.

” Speaking, the Oniba of Iba, appealed to the government to provide security at the grassroots, saying the police post in the community had not been upgraded for long.
